Research Initiatives

Over the last few decades, researchers have discovered that the brain can fundamentally reorganize itself when confronted with new challenges, and that this can occur regardless of age. Evidence suggests that the brain, when given the right exercise, can actually reshape itself to become more efficient. This ability, known by scientists as “neuroplasticity”, has far-reaching implications. Neuroscientists and researchers are continuously discovering new ways for leveraging neuroplasticity to improve the brain's health and performance. At Lumosity, we’re working to enable those research efforts with programs such as the Human Cognition Project, Lumosity Education Access Program and the Clinical Access Research & Education program.

  • The Human Cognition Project (HCP)

The Human Cognition Project represents our groundbreaking research efforts to bring together a network of scientists from 25 of the top neuroscience programs in the world — including Stanford, Berkeley and Harvard — with the goal of using Lumosity as a platform for learning about cognitive enhancement and brain performance.

The HCP merges the latest findings in neuroscience with cutting-edge technology and is based on the “Open Science” model, which allows for transparency, access, and the use of web-based tools to facilitate scientific communication. The project provides researchers with the necessary tools and resources for studying the effects of computerized cognitive training, including access to Lumosity’s 35+ online games, customizable versions of Lumosity, and availability of database subsets.

The Human Cognition Project also enables researchers to conduct experiments over the web, making it easier to recruit participants and saving time by eliminating the need for laboratory visits.

These research efforts contribute to the Lumosity’s database of human cognition, which is the largest in the world, with a worldwide sample of more than 20 million unique individuals and information about their cognitive status, as well as changes in that status over time and with training. Researchers are actively exploring this database to understand the determinants of cognitive performance and cognitive enhancement — all in an effort to make the world a smarter place.

  • Lumosity Education Access Program (LEAP)

The Lumosity Education Access Program provides educators with Lumosity memberships for their students, and is open to private and public school students in 3rd through 12th grade. Educators can apply for up to 50 six-month memberships for their students to use within school in exchange for feedback and data on the use and effectiveness of Lumosity with their students. We then incorporate this feedback into the research and development of future cognitive exercises and programs.

Many of our users around the world are students, and we’re committed to improving their ability to learn and process information. We found that in a study involving 93 middle school students from an Oregon Public School, individuals who completed Lumosity training improved twice as much as the control in measures of math and reading achievement.

If you or an educator you know is interested in participating in LEAP, please fill out the online application.

  • Clinical Access Research & Engagement (CARE)

The Clinical Access Research & Engagement program provides clinicians with Lumosity sample memberships for their patients. We provide clinicians such as psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, neuropsychologists, and others access to 10 one-month trials, with additional memberships provided as needed. In exchange, clinicians provide us with feedback on the use and effectiveness of Lumosity with their patients, and help us learn more about Lumosity’s application in clinical settings.

This feedback helps the Lumosity research and development team optimize Lumosity and the training experience, whether it’s new games, assessments or other improvements.

If you or a clinician you know is interested in participating in the CARE Program, please fill out the online application.
